The Evolution of the Motorcar. Karl Benz 1844-1929 had built his petrol driven car in Germany in 1885, and the first real car imported in Western Australia was a De Dion (8 H.P., 1cyl). Already there was some bold prediction that the car would soon replace the horse and carriage as the main means of transport.
But slowly the world began to change and modern means of transportation and communication made the horse and coach redundant. Coach routes were replaced by railway lines. Trams, cars, buses, and trucks began to move people and goods in Australia. Mr Percy Armstrong was the first motor car importer in Western Australia in 1900.
Horse-drawn Cobb & Co. coaches were finding it difficult to compete with rail, motorcar and air transport in 1924.
