I am delighted to write this Foreword to Alan Hardy’s latest book.
Once again, through his dedication and deep appreciation of all things relating to Albany. Alan has compiled a book of historic photographs from the Albany Historical Society’s own collection. The society is privileged to have Alan as its Photographic collection co-ordinator.
Alan has taken immense care and pride in bringing us the photographic work of some of the very talented photographers of the 19th and 20th centuries – and in so doing has fulfilled my ambition to have come of the most impressive of the societies own photographs published.
The reader will find it fascinating to browse through earlier photographs of very familiar scenes and view life lived at a slower pace and in quieter time.
The photographs were taken when Albany had perhaps passed its very early years of struggle and survived to become the most most important town in a new colony. one can see the town had entered a slightly more relaxed and confident time. These images speak evocatively of a much quieter life and different values to those that surround us today.
This is a book to be savoured quietly.
For just a little while, lose yourself in the book – and perhaps mourn the passing of a gentler age.
I congratulate Alan and commend his book to you.
